Quick Update on Max

Last night we bid a fond farewell to our dear ol' Max.  I didn't think it would really be that big of a deal, especially since he was in the tank for the entire day yesterday and Jack never said a word.  He actually saw the Petco ad in the paper and started asking for all kinds of pets, his first request was a new dog (ya know since his FISH died) then he asked for a  turtle, snake, lizard and finally another fish.  I explained to him that there will NEVER, EVER be a reptile in our home, Mommy is not that nice!  And then I told him a new dog for a fish just wasn't going to happen.

So last night  before dinner we scooped Max out of the fish tank (I never did buy a net and this made it tricky for Daddy - we used disposable silverware.. don't worry, we gently scooped him up with a spoon and knife) and then placed him in a small jewelry box.  All of this was fine and dandy.. until we got to the hole and asked Jack to place him in it.  We're rookies and really didn't know what we were doing - clearly!  That's when the dam broke.  He lost it again and then we felt bad because maybe we shouldn't have asked him to place Max in the hole for all of eternity, never to be seen again!  We said a few fond words.. what is there to say really about a fish that didn't do much!  But we did and then Daddy covered him with dirt.  There were lots of tears and a very sad face for awhile.. until Mommy offered fancy popsicles for dessert - that makes everything better!  This has been a good life lesson for all of us, as parents we now appreciate the lengths our parent's went to protect us from the hurt and as adults.. we know how much it stinks to be the ones in charge!  Jack is now aware of what happens when fish die and let's hope we don't have to face another pet dying for a REALLY long time - you hear that Ruby?  You are with us for at least another decade.. right?!  Because if something were to ever happen to our dog I think I just might end up with several reptiles and a dog just to make it better!

Happy 4th of July weekend.
Love, The Muths
