We bid a sad farewell to our dear friend Max, our Betta fish kicked the bucket. Sorry to be so blunt but it's true. We came home from Sunriver and he was just not looking too well. Jack actually called me into the office to say that he wasn't breathing right and that I needed to fix his tank. I kind of blew it off, thinking the whole time that he was on his way out and that we need to prepare. What I didn't know is that it would happen the next day. Jason and I went into the office in the morning to find Max at the bottom. And not a minute after we walked in Jack came in. This posed a problem, you see it didn't give us much time to prepare our speech and this is how it went.
Jack: Why is Max laying there?
Daddy: Buddy, Max is upside down (Really, Jace? that's what you could come up with?!)
Jack: Thinking for a minute, wait for it, wait for it - boom.. tears start flowing. He has realized that Max is dead. Now he's sobbing - "I love my fish".
Daddy: I know you did buddy, it's okay - he's in heaven now with Molly (our german shepherd)
Somehow this doesn't make it better and he's still sobbing. And of course I'm crying too. Not for the stupid fish, but because I wasn't able to just run out and replace him with another Betta before it happened. Because the last time Max died, that's EXACTLY what I did. Don't be so appalled - I'm not the only mother who switches out dead fish. As a matter of fact the kid at Petco told me that a mom the day before was in looking for a replacement hamster! The last time Max died we could only get a Betta that was a little bigger and brighter in color. I blamed it on the new fish tank and how shiny the new light was! They totally bought it - Yes, I am that good! But this time, Max showed signs of his imminent departure way too late in the evening. I only hoped we had a day or two.. not so. And poor Jack had to learn the lesson early, fish get flushed. I know, I know.. it sounds horrible but what else are we supposed to do?!
Actually - he hasn't been flushed or buried yet, he's still belly up in the running fish tank. Here's how the rest of the morning went...
Brady walks in and asks what is wrong with Jack.
Mommy: Max died.
Brady: Oh.. we should turn off his light then (oh my goodness, no sadness, no tears.. what does that mean? Is he normal?! Of course he is.. he knows that stupid fish die!)
Mommy: Yeah.. he just got old and is in heaven with Molly now.
Brady: What are we going to do with him?
Mommy: Well I think we need to flush him (remember, I told you I did not have time to prepare!)
Jack: Sob, Sob, Sob - a few loud howls and lots of tears and snot. "I don't want to flush him"
Mommy: Okay, okay we'll wait until Daddy gets home to figure it out.
That was YESTERDAY and Max is still in the tank (so gross!) We had plans last night and by the time we got home it was too late to have a burial in our backyard. So I'm afraid tonight there will be a fish funeral in the backyard. What are we supposed to say about dear ol' Max? He lived a long life? He was a good friend? Perhaps that he was the Best Swimmer in Town! I don't know.. but I'm sure it will be awful for us, simply because our sweet big hearted little boy will be so sad.
I think we'll have ice-cream for dessert....
Have a good summer day! And think of us this evening after dinner... we'll be digging a hole in the garden.
Love, The Muths
